Licensed Practical Nurse
NCLEX
Far too many of those who have taken the NCLEX exams asking themselves (and anyone they think can answer) “did I pass?” and worrying that they didn’t end up looking back to the review methodology they used and thinking it inadequate. What is the best NCLEX review method anyway? Is there a single best method?

An ultimate NCLEX review does not exist. There are far too many nursing candidates out there for there to be just one ultimate, 100% pass rate review method everyone can use to pass the NCLEX exams and get their licenses. Different people tend to recall better using different means. A review method of one individual is possibly useless to another. But there are a few things to keep in mind when looking for your best NCLEX review method.

Most of the time people retain only about 10% of what they read, but five times that of what they hear and see. We all know some people tend to be more of visual learners than others, but in general, 50% of what you see and hear, you retain and can easily recall. Now that doesn’t mean you should throw away your written review materials—perhaps it would be best to mix in audio-video materials with your written ones. Instructional DVD’s are available, and if you don’t want to pay a fortune for them brand new, you can always look for used DVDs from former nursing students. Of course, always keep an eye out for quality. If you’re looking for this stuff in the internet, be sure to look for trustworthy user reviews about the ones you find. And while you’re at it, you might as well scour Youtube for any audio/video materials in nursing principles. You might be surprised by what you find.

Keeping that in mind before you start reviewing, be sure to know what you should be reviewing. Know what the examination covers so you can aptly prepare review material that pertains to it. And your studies aren’t the only thing you should review. You should also know preemptively how the exam goes: how it’s graded, how it’s administered, and thus what to expect.

Lastly, go ahead and form a study group. Most of the questions on the exam cover not only technical knowledge but theoretical practice as well. Having a group of people studying together can help out in that you can discuss situations and the best ways to deal with them, while taking advantage of the fact that one person’s lapses can be noticed and corrected by the others. As for prep courses, it’s completely up to you. They do help, of course, but in the end it all boils down to the one taking the exam.
