There are five ways in which an applicant can qualify as an LVN or LPN in California, each of these methods require you to submit a live scan fingerprint form.

The first method is for graduates of vocational nursing in accredited schools in California. They need to be at least 17 years old, and must submit the following requirements:

  • Proof of completion of the 12th grade schooling
  • Fully accomplished application form for vocational nurse licensure
  • Fully accomplished Record of Conviction form
  • Submission of fingerprint form to DOJ and FBI
  • Nonrefundable fee made payable to the Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians
  • Successful completion of the nclex pn in california or National League for Nursing Test (NLN)

After submission of these requirements to the Board, you will be asked to pay an additional fee. Then the processing of your license follows, which will take around 4-6 weeks.

The second method is for graduates of an out-of-state school of practical or vocational nursing which is accredited by the California Board of Nursing.

The third is for those who have completed an equivalent education and/or experience. You must complete at least 51 months of paid bedside nursing duty within ten years. You must apply for your application within the last five years of your completion. Also, you are required to complete a pharmacology course of at least 54 hours. Your experience shall be verified by your employer and you must show certificates signed by the nurse supervisor or nursing director.

The last method is for military applicants. You are required at least 12 months of active duty as a bedside nurse on a hospital ward while in the armed forces. You must also show a proof that honors your military service.

For all methods three to four, you must accomplish the application form for vocational nurse licensure, submit fingerprint form to the DOJ and FBI, take the nclex pn in california attach your application fees, and forward your application to the Board. After this, allow the Board to process your license in 4-6 weeks.

If your license is for renewal, and you were not able to renew your license in four years, it can no longer be renewed or re-issued. You must go through the whole process of application and retaking of NCLEX-PN in order to obtain your new license.
